Autumn Travels

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

It could be the cold air that keeps my brain awake, alert and urges it to hold on to every incoming stimuli
Pushes me further to remember the past.
Perhaps it is the inhalation of smoke, the smell of fire burning
that ignites the primitive regions of my brain to come alive and viscerally respond.
Leaves and crisp air. Nostalgia and tears.
All wrapped up together in a season, a few months of the year.

Reverend Warning

While I was having Jim help me work out my new site, this little warning popped up on my dashboard.

Let that be a warning to you UMWBlogs users. The Reverend is always watching and waiting for his moment to strike! 😉

August 29th, 1852

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I’ve blogged about This Date, From Henry David Thoreau’s Journal blog before on my other blog, but I enjoyed todays entry so much I had to share it with the UMW community.

We boast that we belong to the Nineteenth Century, and are making the most rapid strides of any nation. But consider how little this village does for its own culture. We have a comparatively decent system of common schools, schools for infants only, as it were, but, excepting the half-starved Lyceum in the winter, no school for ourselves. It is time that we had uncommon schools, that we did not leave off our education when we begin to be men.

Funny how some things haven’t changed in the 150 years since Thoreau wrote those words. I also could not help but connect it to Barbara Ganley, who is exploring the idea of “uncommon schools” as we speak.

New Law

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Another school year at Mary Wash.
I have mixed feelings of excitement, nervousness, optimism, and cynicism.

So as promised when I started this blog, cheesy song lyrics for my current cynicism:

Derek Webb – A New Law

“Don’t teach me about politics and government,
just tell me who to vote for.
Don’t teach me about truth and beauty,
just label my music.

Don’t teach me how to live like a free man,
just give me a new law.

I don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me.”

Fighting against the daily grind of automated student activity.

RSS Feed Problems

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Hey, anyone else having problems with some RSS feeds in the class?

I am currently having trouble with the comments feed on Colin and Kelly’s blogs and I can’t subscribe to any of Lisa’s feeds. Maybe it is just broken for the moment, but I wanted to know if anyone else was having the same problem.

Help a Freshman Out

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

So while perusing UMW blogs I noticed this post. Ann is a freshman and just transferred in from JMU. She is looking for recommendations on what classes she should take and what shouldn’t be missed during her time here at Mary Wash.

I know that some of you have been here longer than I have and could recommend some interesting classes to take too. Don’t make this poor freshman resort to the unmoderated depths of!
